Running the Hackney Half Marathon
On Sunday 20th May I will be running my first half marathon in Hackney, East London, alongside some friends and colleagues.
To give me some extra motivation on the day and make the training even more worthwhile, I have decided to try and raise some money for a special charity back home- the West Dorset Branch of the RSPCA. As most of you already know, I am lucky enough to share my family home with an ever-expanding menagerie of Pygmy Goats, Rabbits and Chickens, most of which have been rescued from terrible conditions and neglectful previous owners.
If it wasn’t for the fantastic work of many of our local charities and re-homing centers, then our beloved animals would have never found their forever homes with us. We found Lola, the gorgeous bunny pictured with me, at the RSPCA West Dorset Branch, and she now lives happily with her other half, Prince, another rescue bunny we re-homed last year.
Any donations, however small, will be so gratefully received by myself and the RSPCA West Dorset Branch. Like so many other local animal rescue centres, these smaller charities are often woefully overlooked and under-supported.
The Hackney Half Marathon
Soon after undertaking this challenge at Christmas, it became apparent that my 5ft 2 and a half, generally unfit stature was going to have a hard time adjusting to a long distance running regime.
The training has been tough. There have been sore limbs, endless blisters, several canal-side near misses with cyclists and pedestrians, and even one (un)lucky shower of seagull excrement in Victoria Park - all enhanced by the Great British weather which has somehow managed to provide us with snow and sub-zero temperatures, followed by the unseasonal April heatwave, all within the space of a few weeks.
With now just a few weeks to go until the big day, I am more determined than ever to make it over the finish line with (hopefully) a half-decent time of around 2 hours.
