Bea's Pedal-powered Refugee Fundraiser
Athens is one of the first cities that people fleeing war will come to in Europe; with European borders closed, many are stuck there. Khora http://www.khora-athens.org/ is a grassroots community centre that supports them in meeting their basic needs: food, language classes, clothing, medical aid and legal advice.
I am one of many people, I am sure, who has wondered what on earth I can do to make a difference. Thighs of Steel www.thighsofsteel.com is my answer! I am putting my legs to good use to raise some cash for Khora's excellent work, via Help Refugees, in the place it's most needed.
As part of a crew riding all the way from London to Athens, I will join them for a section that is...
- Paris to Trieste (Northeast Italy) via Lyon and Milan (yes! over the Alps!!)
- 3 weeks, from late May to mid-June
- Just shy of 2000 kilometers
- Total climbing 20,700m
Last year the ride raised over 50,000 Euros - help us beat that this year!
Thighs of Steel 2017
We are fundraising for Help Refugees, who fund small grassroots refugee organisations. The specific group we are fundraising for is Khora, a co-operative made up of volunteers from all over the world, including the local Greek community, the refugee community and other international volunteers. Their community centre in Athens provides not only basic needs such as free nutritious food, warm clothing and access to dental care, but also social needs such as education, child care, access to information and a safe space to build relationships and relax.
