Bats in Zambia Project Fundraising
Wildlife conservation and ecology are my lifelong passions. Zambia has a rich diversity of wildlife under constant threat from habitat loss and over exploitation; our bats are no exception but have the added disadvantage of being completely misunderstood and persecuted. I initiated our project to address the lack of knowledge and awareness of bats. Bats without Borders, The Rufford Foundation and the University of Stirling and many other collaborators, have come together to change minds and hearts about bats. As part of the project I am focussing my PhD research on how bats may be using agricultural landscapes and the effects our agricultural practices may have on them. Despite being the main cause of habitat loss, agriculture could also have the greatest potential to save them. Bats consume huge amounts of insects, including crop pests, making them biocontrol champions. I am an active volunteer for Bats without Borders - we desperately need funding to keep the research and education efforts alive.
