Jungle Canopy Bashas - Portable Emergency Shelters
Jungle Canopy was originally established in 2015 to deliver caravans to the Calais Jungle, providing shelter and protection to unaccompanied minors, families and vulnerable people.
Since October 2016, Jungle Canopy now aligns with other groups, to provide support to refugees and forced migrants in Calais, Dunkirk and Paris.
This fundraiser is being administered by Care4Calais, but donations will be ringfenced and the bashas will also be delivered to Help Refugees and Mobile Refugee Support, as required.
Bashas - Portable, emergency shelters.
There is a pressing need around Calais/Dunkirk, for emergency shelter. The police are slashing tents and confiscating bedding, to ensure the area is as “inhospitable” as possible. They are working illegally, to create a hostile environment.
Winter is here, so we’re in a race against time. Again. If people are forced to sleep outdoors, without any form of shelter, it is inevitable that over the coming cold, wet months, some of them will die.
So... Bashas. This is what the British Army used before the invention of Gore-Tex and bivvy bags.
A basha is discrete, versatile, effective and lightweight. It’s portable...easy to “grab and go”; you can quickly unhook the bungees, then shove the basha down the front of your jacket, and run for safety.
Two tarpaulins. One as top cover; one as a groundsheet. The top cover is supported by elastic bungees attached to trees, or by sticks and pegs in the ground (see pics).
We can provide a full basha for £5; half the cost of a bivvy bag, and it will shelter up to three people, rather than one. If we can raise £2,500, we will fund 500 bashas.
