Auntie Alice Runs
My friends son Josh was born on the 22nd March 2018 by emergency c section. He was very poorly when he was born and was diagnosed with a condition known as NAIT (neonatal alloimmune thrombocytapoenia). This meant that he hardly had any platelets due to an incompatibility with his mum while in utero. He stayed in NICU for a few days to be monitored and had a platelet transfusion, he responded well and began making his own platelets and was able to go home after a week stay. I dread to think what could have happened had he been born naturally and we all thank the surgeons and midwives at the maternity unit in his local hospital.
This condition is not well known and is not a routine test that is performed for pregnant women but it can be life threatening.
The charity we are running for is based in Penzance and is one of the only NAIT charities in the world who are trying to raise awareness for this life threatening condition.
Having suffered a miscarriage the year before my friend was told NAIT could have been a contributing factor so it is more important than ever that awareness of this is raised!
