Anne's Fundraising Page for Breast Friends
I'm running the London Marathon on April 28th and hope you'll encourage and support me by donating to Breast Friends Sutton Coldfield
Raising money for
Breast Friends Sutton Coldfield
I was (just) 45 years old when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2003. Like many people I considered it a death sentence and embarked upon surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy with a mixture of fear and resignation. The irony of enduring treatment that makes you ill, for a condition that you didn't know you had, is hard to come to terms with. During this time I discovered the Breast Friends group at Good Hope Hospital. They provide volunteers for the clinics at the hospital as well as a range of practical help. The positive attitude of the volunteers did impress me, even though I had no need for any of their particular services.
In 2008 the group encouraged members who were able to enter for the Great Midlands Fun Run. I'd never been good at any form of sport, although I had been toying with the idea of trying a bit of running as a way of trying to prevent the osteoporosis that is a potential side effect of part of my treatment.
The atmosphere on the day was tremendous - supporting everyone no matter what their ability - I was 'hooked'.
Later that year I joined Aldridge Running Club - the best thing I ever did.
London Marathon 2019
I ran the London Marathon in 2013, to celebrate 10 years' cancer-free since diagnosis. I found the training hard and didn't enjoy the race much so never intended to do it again, but then I ran the inaugural Birmingham International Marathon in 2017 and loved it, gaining a Good For Age place for this year's London event. That means that all money raised here will go directly to helping Breast Friends, as this place has cost them nothing.
Many run races in memory of loved ones who are no longer with them, many others in support of friends and family who are going through treatment - fantastic reasons for making this huge effort to raise funds. I run in grateful thanks for health and strength and in support of a group that does so much for those affected by what is still a feared disease. I also hope that I can bring a little hope to others who are where I was sixteen years ago.
