My Mental Health took a bit of a beating when my house flooded back in 2009. At the time it was the opportunities that I had to be in the outdoor environment that helped me, walking & biking to work were both invaluable, as well as the support of friends and my folks.

I now work for an awesome charity which gives people the opportunity to gain from both the outdoor environment and being part of a supportive community by growing organic vegetables in South Cumbria, which we sell as part of a Cropshare scheme in the local area.

Growing Well is in a glorious location, a 6 acre site which can be very muddy and wet. It’s easy to get to from Kendal by bike, but currently we don’t have anywhere to store bikes or to change in. We want to encourage people to come and in particular think about their overall wellbeing by biking here, so money raised will go towards a “Bike and Changing Facility”. I’m not able to give you the exact spec. or cost yet but I’m hoping to raise as much money as I can. Any surplus will go towards our Catering Project – our catering volunteers use veg that is below our Cropshare Bag standard to cook and provide scrummy vegetarian lunches.

Event details

Here's the plan....

I’ll be walking up Kilimanjaro – the highest mountain in Africa and one of the “Seven Summits”. As I love adventures and expeditions I’ve decided to completely fund the expenses of the trip myself so any money I raise through donations will be going directly to the charity – everyone at Growing Well shouts “Hurrah!”.

It definitely won’t all be easy though - the summit day will be LONG (1am start), COLD (could get down to -20 with the wind chill) and LACKING IN OXYGEN (50% less than sea level, body will definitely not be functioning on all cylinders).

The route we’ll be taking is the Lemosho route which approaches from the West and then skirts south round the peak before the summit day on the 27th February. I obviously don’t have any pictures yet, but the one on this page is from the company I’m going with so that’ll be the view and those will most probably be the tents – picture me there if you can!

As I type there are some ideas floating around in my head about how you can join me on the summit, for a generous donation of course! More details to follow :o)
