Back in the saddle for Help Refugees
I am delighted for a third opportunity to join the epic Thighs of Steel cycle odyssey. Over the last three years the ride has raised over £150,000 to help set up and sustain Khora, a humanitarian co-operative foundation in Athens providing services for refugees forced from their homes by war, poverty and climate change. Khora provides nutritious meals as well as a whole range of services including legal advice, dentistry, self defence and music classes and children's play projects. Khora is a grassroots operation, which means that all the money goes directly to supporting the people who are most in need. Refugees also play a large part in the running of the organisation, ensuring that the services provided are flexible to fit the needs of the community
The underlying causes that have forced millions to flee from their homes have not changes, meanwhile the hostile environment created in Europe has amplified the trauma that so many ordinary people are facing.
I'm joining the ride from Brussels to Stuttgart - 660km over 6 days with 7000m of climbing.
London to Athens 2018
A group of not-so-serious cyclists have set themselves the serious challenge of cycling between London and Athens. The ride is a relay-style challenge, with each participant taking on a week or two of the overall trip.
We are fundraising for Khora; a grassroots, proactive association running a community centre in Athens. Their centre provides basic and human needs for people without freedom of movement. This includes free nutritious food, clothing, education, access to information and a safe space to build relationships and relax.
Equally important to what they offer, is how they offer it. Khora is run by volunteers from all over the world. Its team includes members of the local Greek community, the refugee community and other international volunteers too. It prioritises dignity and respect in every service it provides.
The £60,000 we are aiming to raise will pay for the rent for their community centre for an entire year. The running costs of a project are typically the hardest to find funding for, so it of particular importance to be able to provide this for Khora, to secure a stable future for the project. All fund-raised money goes to Khora, and none on the ride.
