Mt. Kilimanjaro Challenge – Adrian's done it!!
I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in October 2015 as a climax to a year long health improvement drive with the added incentive of improving the health and well being of others through a great local Charity. The Kamla Foundation is a registered charity based in the UK helping vulnerable communities in India develop their capacity to meet basic needs and create solutions to poverty and injustice. They are led by volunteers who strive to ensure 100% of money raised goes straight to the work they do. Similarly I funded this trip from my own pocket so that all the sponsorship monies raised will go towards the valuable work of the Foundation. I want to thank everyone who sponsored me and wished me well on my challenge. It was an amazing experience with some difficult moments, but my determination and your kind words pulled me through it. Reaching the peak was the “high point” but so was the journey. Lasting friendships have been made and a desire to tackle other peaks too!
The Climb - 20th - 25th October 2015
SUMMIT DAY - At midnight exactly, the team set off for the slow 6 hour assent to Gilman’s Point along the crater rim of the volcano. On arrival, we stopped to take in the sunrise over Mawenzi peak before continuing our assent to Stella Point, where we could view one of the glaciers. Finally we made the last traverse to Uhuru Peak, which at 5896m, is the highest point in Africa! The temp at the summit was -15 deg C and all water in our backpacks had frozen by this time! The group leader advised that we should not stay at the summit for more than 15 minutes so afteradmiring the view and taking a few photos we started the decent back to Kibo camp.
