About

Five of us from Bideford Canoe Club, 4 men and a lady are paddling to Anglesey.
Who we are:
Peter Thorn, the instigator of this trip, retired but a club coach and holder of the BCU 5 star award
John Rowe, A keen paddler.
Ian Dring, A sea kayaker for over 10 years, throughout the UK and Europe and works as a business development manager for social enterprise
Kevin Sumners, another keen paddler and works as a joiner
Emily Harding, An outdoor enthusiast with a love for water, in it and on it, she is an outdoor instructor, who owns a kayaking and walking business: North Devon Explorers.

We all paddle together in Devon and decided to take on this long distance challenge.

Having spent so much time on the water, we know how vital the RNLI is to the UK and having seen the BBC series Saving lives at sea  really reinforces the importance of ensuring that this fantastic organisation can operate for years to come.

Event details

Sea Kayaking adventure from England to Wales

We are taking on the feat of paddling 299 miles from Appledore to Anglesey. Our adventure begins on Friday 13th July and we are hoping to complete it in two weeks, dependent on the weather and sea conditions.

We will be self-sufficient, carrying all of our food and camping gear

The trip consists of some big open crossings, the first being, the Bristol Channel from Devon to Wales and then the trip will follow the beautiful yet rugged Welsh coastline.  We will need to work out tides correctly and plan our get outs carefully so as to minimise the need for difficult rocky landings!

The RNLI save thousands of people in the UK every year and it is run by volunteers risking their own lives to save walkers stranded on beaches with an incoming tide, swimmers swept out to sea, animals falling off of cliffs, and boaters getting stuck on mud flats.

We are an island and at some point most of us will encounter the coast, anyone can get caught out.

Here is what your donation can buy:
£17 buys two red & yellow flags to keep people safe on the beach
£45 buys a pair of yellow wellies to keep the lifeboat crew safe & steady
£198 buys a helmet to protect the crew
