About

Rosie joined The Not Forgotten Association in 1998. Despite entering  into her 19th year as Head of Events, she never fails to be amazed by the many thousands of veterans she meets on NFA adventures and outings. They continually motivate her to run marathon after marathon and take part in tough challenge after challenge in order to raise funds.

In April 2017, Rosie Thompson and NFA veteran and friend, Martin Wilson, will run 270km through the Sahara Desert. Rosie has never failed to be impressed by Martin’s spirit and determination as he has overcome the effects of life-changing injuries sustained in Afghanistan in 2011 whilst serving with 2 Para. Inspired by his unwavering courage, Rosie is taking part in this extraordinary race in order to raise funds for extraordinary people like her running partner Martin.

Event details

The Marathon des Sables 2017

The Marathon des Sables has been described as The Toughest Footrace on Earth. It is truly gruelling multi-stage adventure through a mythical landscape in one of the world’s most inhospitable environments – the Sahara desert. You have to be self-sufficient and carry all your own food and equipment for the week on your back. Communal goat’s-hair Berber tents are pitched every night but, apart from that you have to take it with you. Water is rationed and if you exceed the ration, you get a time penalty.

IN SUMMARY

250+ kms (156+ miles)

6 stages over 7 days

A long stage of 80+ kms (52+miles)

Self-sufficient but with water rations and tent supplied

Temperatures of 50+ degrees centigrade
