About

Hi I am 34 year old Alan Ladd from Mallusk. Alongside my brother Jonny and 7 others from my running club Mallusk Harriers, I plan to run all 24 parkrun routes in Northern Ireland in 24 hours, in aid of Action Cancer.

In 2011 my mum Catherine, was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. She had months of treatment and we thought the cancer had gone away. However, in 2013 it returned, this time incurable. She passed away in August 2014 aged 59.

My mum was a member of Abbey Runners running club in Leeds, and got me into running aged 19 by doing the Belfast Marathon with me in 2003. She completed 5 marathons, Paris, Perpignan, Lake Vyrnwy (Wales) and Belfast twice with a PB of 4.18. Having run several parkruns in Leeds, my mum alerted us to parkrun crossing the water in 2010. My wife Louise and I took part in the very first parkrun in Northern Ireland at Waterworks Belfast.

“24in24” was inspired by Eddie Izzard's unbelievable 27 marathons in 27 days.

I have chosen Action Cancer for their work in the area of early breast screening, health checks and family support.

This challenge would not be possible without the incredible support from Mallusk Harriers and my family.

Parkrun is a free timed weekly 5k run that takes part in 24 different locations across Northern Ireland. On the 24th June at 9:30am, the team will start at the Derry City parkrun before travelling to and completing each and every parkrun course in the province within 24 hours.

The total distance will be close to 80 miles and is the equivalent of 3 marathons. The driving distance of around 350 miles is expected to take nearly half of the allotted time.

The start-stop nature of the running will pose the guys a massive challenge, making it much harder than a straight 80 mile run.

Logistically, the runners are indebted to volunteers from Mallusk Harriers who will ferry the team about on the day and through the night.

Full details of the challenge including live tracking can be found at www.24in24.run.

We also have a facebook and twitter feed with live updates which are @24in24ni.
