Kenya Charity Trip 2020
The trip is being run by Lewisham District Scouts and we will be working alongside the Harambee For Kenya charity that runs 2 safe houses for ‘street kids’. These safe houses offer food, a safe place, a bed, clean clothes, an education and a chance to gain self-respect again. Most of these children have been orphaned or abandoned because their families can’t afford to feed them, abused and beaten on the streets, are starving and forced to do unspeakable things for a little bit of food and many become hooked on sniffing glue. The conditions they live in are appalling and it is a struggle to survive from day to day. This trip will not only be a chance for our young people to enrich the lives of these street kids but it will be a life-changing experience for them.
Helping the Young people in Kenya
What will you be doing in Kenya?
To enable us to make this trip we have to raise £1,750 per person (most of that is the cost of the flights) and then extras to take out with us. Books to help with teaching reading, pens, pencils etc. Tools to be able to do much-needed repairs (we are hoping to build some chicken coops so the boys can have fresh eggs) and also tents for us to camp in while we are there and can leave for the boys so they can go camping.Main activities will be repairs, painting and decorating, building chicken coops, building a storage room and fixing boundary fences to keep the houses safe. All the rescued kids become scouts so we will teach them some scouting activities and maybe take them camping. Teaching them games and new songs is always fun something they have lacked in their lives.
