2018 Sponsored Solar Cycle Ride

This is the fifth annual bike ride organised by Waltham Forest Thuso in South Africa. Once again, supporters will cycle between 10 and 40 miles from Walthamstow to raise money for life-changing solar lights.

The bike ride will fund solar lanterns for children and their families at Lobethal primary school in rural Limpopo Province and in informal settlements in Gauteng province.

Up to 40% of South Africans still use kerosene for heating, lighting and cooking – a highly- flammable and toxic fuel. Others rely on torches with expensive batteries for emergencies.

Now a new generation of cheap, high-performing solar lights can provide clean, safe lighting and phone charging – and require no specialist installation or maintenance.

We have already sent hundreds of lights to the schools we support in South Africa and the families that use them find them a real life-changer. By donating a relatively small amount of money, you can have a direct impact upon the daily lives of schoolchildren.

Help us raise money to fund solar lamps – because children without light can’t study!

Waltham Forest Thuso in South Africa is a charity founded in 2006 by members of the North East London branch of ACTSA (successor to Anti-Apartheid). We share Nelson Mandela’s vision that the children of South Africa are the country’s greatest asset. Yet many children are still disadvantaged by the legacy of apartheid. One hundred per cent of donations made to WFTISA go to the pupils and families we support.
