Row the Indian Ocean 2018

Thank you to all who donated to this fundraising event. Your donations have been gratefully received. This event is no longer accepting donations.

In June 2018, four British men plan to row their way into the record books by becoming the fastest four-man crew to row the Indian Ocean. Only half of the crews that have attempted the crossing have been successful - less than 50 people can claim to have rowed across the Indian Ocean. To put that into context, over 500 people have been into space, and Everest has been summited over 7,500 times.

The crew, Robin Buttery, Billy Taylor, James Plumley and Barry Hayes are aiming to raise awareness and funds for Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease (YOPD).  They are also supporting vital research into Parkinson's in the hope it will change the way it is diagnosed and treated.

Funds raised enabling this event to take place will be divided equally between the following 3 charities once expenses have been covered:

  • The Clear Trust (www.cleartrust.org.uk)
  • R.A.F.T. (https://raft.ac.uk/)
  • EPDA (http://www.epda.eu.com/)

Robin was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson's Disease in June 2015 just before his 44th birthday. Robin and the crew hope to show a positive image for people living with Parkinson's and especially those coming to terms with a recent diagnosis.

My husband diagnosed in last few years in late 70s. Our whole plan for an active retirement changed. Brilliant to see these younger sufferers picking up the gauntlet to move research forward and living life to the full not giving in to their symptoms
