In memory of Dr Peter Hurford 22.11.30 - 3.3.19

Peter Hurford died on 3 March aged 88. Peter was Master of the Music at the Abbey from 1958-78 and, with his wife Pat, founded the International Organ Festival in 1963. Soon after arriving in St Albans he designed a new organ that redefined the potential of a cathedral organ. He had a long, distinguished career, focused on church music and the pipe organ, as a solo performer, recording artist (especially the music of J. S. Bach), teacher, composer and writer. He recorded all of Bach’s organ music for Decca and the BBC. His unique contribution to the world of church and organ music was recognised in many ways, including the award of an OBE. His work in these other spheres is widely praised but at St Albans we remember him as Master of the Music, where he transformed the Abbey’s music and, through the IOF, brought international status to the Cathedral and the city. Generations of choristers, musicians and members of the congregation owe an immeasurable debt to the man who made music really come alive in St Albans in a unique way. For these reasons, Peter’s family have chosen to invite donations in his memory to the Cathedral Music Trust.
