Fundraising for Mobile Youth Centre
Refugee Youth Service are partnering with Help Refugees and L'Auberge des Migrants on an important new project, supporting unaccompanied minors in Northern France. The mobile youth centre will be a vehicle providing a safe-space for minors, legal support, information on asylum in France and other European countries, access to WiFi and phone charging, classes and activities. It will be a focal point for child protection and safeguarding.
Many young unaccompanied minors are currently sleeping rough in forests, fields and in the streets in Calais and the surrounding area. During nightly patrols in the months of January - March, teams doing outreach work in Calais have encountered between 200 to 300 unaccompanied minors living outside. They have precarious access to food and no access to shelter, showers, psychological support, legal services or other needs. There are a further 100+ unaccompanied minors currently living in the camp in Dunkirk.
We will have a full-time French social worker and a French legal case-worker on the team, providing a consistent, professional service for displaced young people in Northern France.
