Relief and rebuilding in Southern Malawi

Cyclone Idai has devasted Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Southern Malawi.  This followed extensive rain in the region during the previous week which had already resulted in loss of life, homes and road infrastructure.

Your gift will ensure that water pumps are repaired, we can assist communities returning to villages, and people's houses can be rebuilt.

Flooding was wide spread in Nsanje, in Southern Malawi. In 14 districts the maize crop which was almost ready for harvest has been destroyed. Water contamination is a great risk after flooding.  Fisherman’s Rest Malawi in partnership with Medecins sans Frontieres, have committed to repair water pumps starting this weekend in the valley south of Chipwepwete, making water safe for impacted communities and health centres.  They will then assist communities returning to villages.

At one of our partner schools, Chipwepwete, the rain was intensive and caused one of the temporary classrooms to fall over. The road to the school was impassable and the nearby river rose to neck height making it impossible to cross. As over two thirds of the children at Chipwepwete primary come across the river to get to school, this is obviously dangerous when the river is high.
Any additional funds raised will be used to rebuild houses, roads and bridges around Chipwepwete
