Helping Refugees In Jordan

The Mandala Trust is working with the volunteer organisation Helping Refugees in Jordan (HRJ) in its inspiring projects to provide high quality, compassionate education for traumatised Syrian and Iraqi refugee children.
HRJ and its grass roots partners have recently set up two schools. The Hope School, near Amman, opened in September 2016 and now has 75 pupils. The Al Rahlan School, in the northern region, is a ‘scattered’ school based in tents, cabins and a villa near to where refugees are working in poor conditions on farms. It has 475 pupils. The teachers, refugees themselves, were trained in Syria or Iraq – as the schools are a charitable project, they are allowed to work here, and their income will be vitally important for both their families and the impoverished local communities in which they live.

In the UN-supported camps in Jordan, people have access to the basic means of survival; but the 80% of Syrian refugees who live outside the camps receive little or no food aid and no medical support, and do not have work permits. Syrian refugee children can go to a local government school, but places are limited and the schools are underfunded. Iraqi refugee children are not eligible for any state education.
