Life Associations Cross India Cycle Challenge

In November 2014, a team of brave and determined cyclists will take on Life Associations Cross India Challenge – A 1000km+ ride from the west coast to the east of India. The riders will start in Mumbai where Life Association’s Dalit Candles are produced. Then after 10 days and over 1000km of gruelling cycling they will finish to a hero’s welcome at Life Association’s largest children home built and run through the sale of Dalit products in Gannavaram on the east of India. The team of cyclists will be the first people to ever attempt this route and will navigate India’s legendary roads and mountain passes riding through and staying in many remote Dalit communities along the way. The purpose of this ride is to both raise awareness of the oppression and injustice 250 million Dalit people in India face every day, as well as to raise £25,000 to build a second floor at our school in Machilipatnam so that the remaining children in that village can receive an education.

We opened our school in the slum village of Machilipatnam in 2010 whose residences suffered from leprosy and poverty on an extreme level. The children were employed as rat pickers at the local station with none of them receiving an education. Our school currently provides an education, food & healthcare for 125 children. Sadly, only half the village’s children can come so we are in urgent need of a second floor. We intend to use all the proceeds of the challenge to meet this pressing need.
