Bulleid carriages - seats and tables

We are restoring two Bulleid designed wooden-framed carriages dating from the 1940's.
This work is being carried out in our workshop at Ropley, partially funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the Canadian Pacific project. We now need to raise a further £23,000 for the seats and tables to fit-out the restored carriages.

  • No. 1456 is an open third class carriage, with 64 seats arranged in two open saloons.
  • No. 4367 is a semi open brake third class carriage, with an open saloon and two compartments.
All of the seats for the open saloons are being manufactured, as none of the original seats have survived. The internal frames for the seats in the compartments of no. 4367 have survived, so these will be renovated and re-upholstered.
The seats will be covered in moquette with the Southern Railway fleur-de-lys pattern, made by the original manufacturer Holdsworth Fabrics (now known as Camira).
These carriages were used as part of the Bournemouth dining trains and had tables in the open saloons. Most Bulleid carriages did not have tables, but ours did, so new table tops will be manufactured and the legs and brackets will be made in our workshop.

We aim to complete no. 1456 by March 2019 and no. 4367 the following year. We would really appreciate your donations to help ensure that we can complete the renovation work and put these two carriages back into service behind our flagship loco, Merchant Navy class no. 35005 Canadian Pacific.
