Famine in Kotido, Uganda

Despite some early rains, drought took hold in parts of north east Uganda during the year.  When it became evident that people were going to struggle to eat enough, we sent funds to Loyoro and Panyangara parishes in Kotido Diocese.  Both these parishes have received food aid from us in recent years, as the cycle of floods and droughts has meant that decent harvests have been impossible.  However, as the year has drawn to a close, ever more people have approached these parishes, which have become in effect feeding stations.
Fr Andrew Mitema explained that hunger is driving some people to drink which is contributing to domestic violence.  Women and girls are foraging ever further for edible wild vegetation and are at risk from wild elephants and other animals.  People are making charcoal to sell for whatever little money they can, but the charcoal business is a major threat to the environment and poses serious consequences.  All these are the direct result of not enough food.
We are continuing to support the feeding programmes in Panyangara and Loyoro parishes during these heartbreaking and terrible times.  Please help us if you can.
