Zimele projects aim to tackle the impact of poverty and HIV on children. Most caregivers are women, many of them grandmothers. By working with these women to develop businesses, the children benefit from the increase in household income. The adults take pride in themselves and their community, and build the foundations of self-reliance. The children learn from their positive example.
Zimele achieves its objectives through self-help groups and core training modules that focus on personal development and business training. The women meet regularly and save small amounts of money. They use these savings for their household needs such as food and schooling. We also encourage them to develop income-generating ideas. The women have started businesses as diverse as a creche, egg selling, sewing, vegetable production, hairdressing and tourism.
