Charity description

W M T (Wilkins Memorial Trust) logo
We are working to improve the lives of poor and marginalised Nepali families, with a special focus on children. The trust was founded after the death of the Wilkins family, who were returning to Nepal on the PIA flight that crashed into a mountain on 28 September 1992. Everyone on board was killed. Andrew was to work on hydroelectric schemes, Helen was working with Nepali families and the children were attending school and loving their time in Nepal. The trust works with local NGOs with whom we have established a good working relationship over many years. They work in schools, with young disabled people and the poor who have little or no access to medical care. Through the NGOs we can support schools in their work to educate the children of the importance of maintaining their environment, providing money for books for lending libraries and special projects proposed by the children. CBRS provides physiotherapy, support and awareness raising of disability in and around Pokhara. Through the income generation programme we sponsor poor families with start-up assistance, improving their social status and enabling their disabled child to achieve their potential.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the PIA plane crash in which the Wilkins family died returning to Nepal for service. The trust was set up in their memory, especially the children, Hannah, Naomi & Simeon. To mark the anniversary this year we are funding a drama competition in the schools we are involved with that are in the original crash site area. This was a particularly heavily damaged area in the earthquakes with many villages almost completely destroyed and many schools left with very limited facilities and buildings. Children were traumatised by their experiences and drama provides a means of expressing their feelings.
