Charity description

Windmill Hill Windmill Trust logo
The windmill at Windmill Hill. Transformed from a neglected ruin to a working mill.

The Windmill Hill Windmill Trust and the Friends of the Windmill Hill Windmill exist to preserve and maintain the windmill for the benefit of the public. We are all volunteers and every penny of your donation will go towards the maintenance of the windmill.

We need to raise about £10,000 every year to maintain the windmill in good order. Your donation will help us to do that.

Our Sponsor A Cog scheme will help us to replace the cogs on the brakewheel so that we can begin to grind flour again. If you would like to sponsor a cog, give a donation of £10 or more and we will record your name in the brakewheel register and send you a certificate. Please put 'Sponsor A Cog' in the personal message box when making your donation.

After years of neglect the windmill at Windmill Hill was in danger of collapse. In 1996 the Windmill Hill Windmill Trust was formed with the aim of restoring and maintaining the mill and in December 2001 the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded a grant of over £570,000 towards the project. The Trust raised the additional funding of £200,000 and in 2003 the restoration work began. Over the next three years every part of the mill was repaired or re-made and refitted — and the windmill opened to the public in 2006. More recently a second grant was awarded to restore the milling machinery and this was completed in 2016.
