West End Refugee Service
‘The actions and support of WERS, through very difficult situations. And standing up for us. These are the things that really transform a person’s life.’ (WERS client)
Practical help, advice and advocacy for over 500 asylum seekers and refugees are provided through daily drop-in advice session run by WERS’ multi-lingual support worker and trained volunteers. WERS also offers home visits for those who find it difficult to visit WERS’ offices and a hardship fund, providing emergency payments to destitute clients.
Emotional support is offered through an accredited befriending scheme - the only one of its kind on Tyneside.
An extensive awareness-raising, education and training programme reaching almost 2,000 people each year gives refugees a voice and challenges the misconceptions surrounding asylum. Last year 1,866 people of all ages heard a WERS talk.
