Waddington Street Centre, which is based at 2/3 Waddington Street in Durham City, works to deliver effective support and meaningful opportunities to people living in the community with established mental health needs. Through the provision of a wide range of services the Centre supports personal development and recovery thereby reducing isolation and combating social exclusion.

The Centre was established in 1981. Due to the award of a major grant from the National Lottery Charities Board in 1997 the Centre was able to undertake a substantial project to refurbish and extend its premises.
The Centre’s services are available primarily to adults with severe and enduring mental health difficulties, the majority of whom have been referred by a relevant mental healthcare professional.

The Centre is open during the daytime five days per week (Monday - Friday). This provision is the Centre’s core service. Over the last few years, however, the centre has further extended out-of-hours service provision, including very successful art-related courses and café/drop in on Saturdays, which are offered on a non-referral basis. There are also open access evening sessions, including drop-ins, music and poetry performance nights, young people, men’s and women’s groups.
WSC provides supported tenancies in association with the Hospital of God at Greatham charity and St Margaret’s Church in Durham. Housing support workers are provided in conjunction with the former Supporting People scheme commissioned by Durham County Council. In early 2017 the centre started to provide a supported living scheme in Sherburn Hill in partnership with property company Davison Holdings Limited.
