Unfinished Histories was established in 2006 to record the vibrant and innovative work of the experimental, political, women's, black, asian, gay, lesbian, theatre-in-education, community and disabled theatre companies that began emerging in Britain in the late 1960s. Their output ranged from experiments in physical and visual theatre or performance art, to vernacular dram, agit-prop and satire, championing a generation of artists whose work has influenced and shaped present day theatre.
Since our beginning we have completed over 70 major interviews with practitioners from alternative theatre, and collected a vast amount of related archive material – photos, flyers, posters, scripts, programmes – that would have otherwise been lost.
We produce regular events, including exhibitions, play readings, panel discussions and talks, which bring together those who originally worked in alternative theatre with following generations of artists and audiences.
