TheHorseCourse delivers an innovative horse-assisted programme with strong evidence to back efficacy.

Your donations help us to deliver this programme to people who are excluded from society because talk-based services are not working for them. We work by referral only from schools, mental health services, social workers; and specialist organisations working with drug & alcohol misuse, domestic violence or veterans.

As well as helping hundreds of troubled people each year in Dorset, UK we also train and support others to replicate our effective work in the UK and Internationally.

Our horses are specially trained to give clear and unbiased feedback on emotional regulation and social skills. Tasks are progressive and challenging, requiring the participants to remain calm and focused, use clear communication and assertive, playful (not aggressive) leadership.

Participants are coached one-to-one by skilled facilitators to overcome frustration and failure by taking control over their thoughts and feelings. The horses provide both motivation and feedback, and reliably create positive change with even the most troubled individuals.

Submitting to rigorous research and evaluation is a major focus of our organisation, see:
  • 81% of participants improve 8 core social/emotional skills by 10.4 points on a 32 point scale (Bournemouth University 2017, statistically significant analysis)
  • 80% improve attendance/ engagement at school, training, work.
  • 27 % points reduction in reoffending amongst high risk violent young offenders.

The horsemanship goal of the week-long ReStart programme is to gain Parelli Level 1, the more important goal is to gain the skills to lead constructive and satisfying lives.
