The Garnwen Trust

Charity description

The Garnwen Trust logo
The Garnwen Trust is a charity set up in memory of Alex Collins and Bethan Jones. Alex and Beth had just started a 'gap year' round the world trip and had only spent one day in Bangkok, Thailand, when they took an internal flight to Phuket on Sunday 16th September 2007. The aeroplane crash landed in Phuket and 90 people were killed. Alex lost his life in the aeroplane crash and Beth died ten days later in a hospital in Bangkok..

.The Charity was set up in 2008 when Alex's parents decided to hold the 'Walk for Al' in his memory. The route took walkers over the Garnwen Mountain into the beautiful surroundings of Afan Country Park. This walk is now an annual event in the town. Initially monies were donated to Headway, Bridgend, Morriston Hospital Burns Unit and to a charity which supports orphans of the psunami in Phuket. Our charity has gone from strengh to strengh over the years and it was decided to build a multifunctional log cabin at Afan Country Park to be used by disabled children, children with learning difficulties, educational courses and for anyone in need of respite. To date we have received planning permission to build our cabin from Neath/Port Talbot council and have raised £95,000 towards the build. Admiral Insurance 'Inspire' choir and the Ford Mountain Bike team are just two of our many supporters.
