The Friend's of St. Leonards, Flamstead

Charity description

The Friend's of St. Leonards, Flamstead logo
Flamstead village is privileged to have an ancient Grade 1 listed church that has stood in the heart of the village for nearly 900 years. With its rich history it serves as not only a place of worship but also a valuable meeting point for the village. It is a great treasure adding much character to the village enriching the lives of all the residents.

The Friends of St Leonard's Flamstead is a charitable trust, founded in 1995, which is dedicated to preserving and maintaining the fabric of the ancient Grade 1 listed church that has stood in the heart of the village for nearly 900 years. Such an old church require constant attention to keep it weather-proof. It houses rare medieval wall paintings dating from the 13th century, which are second only to those housed in St. Albans Cathedral.  These are being threatened by the damp conditions in the church. Much of the internal stonework is crumbling and affected by damp and needs restoring by specialist craftsmen.  Much of the money previously raised has been invested in repairing the eroded clerestory windows to make them waterproof.  Our priority now is the urgent roof repairs required as well as two remaining clerestory windows, whose repairs are likely to cost in excess of £600,000. Please donate to support our cause to help us save our church.
