Charity description

The Dan Eley Foundation logo
Dan Eley is a young man from Surrey in the UK who was working as a volunteer street child worker in Latin America when a tragic diving accident in the Amazon left him paralysed from the shoulders downwards on New Years Day 2010. Dan spent one year in hospital fighting for his life and overcoming enormous emotional and physical challenges of being so severely paralysed. During his time there he met many people who had overcome extreme adversity to go one and achieve great things in life. This inspired him to pursue his dream of starting apprenticeship-style training schemes for youngsters living in poverty in Colombia.

One of the many lessons Dan learned is that where there's a will there's a way and despite his disability Dan continued to work towards his aspiration of founding a charity to help vulnerable young people overcome adversity and find the strength and belief to make a success of their lives.Through The Dan Eley Foundation (DEF) Dan and his trustees fundraise for ongoing apprenticeship schemes working with a partner charity in Colombia called: Foundation Education for All or FEDUT. As well as helping impoverished youngsters in South America the foundation supports youngsters from extremely disadvantaged backgrounds locally in the UK. Dan hopes his story will inspire youngsters to overcome extreme adversity, empowering them and helping them develop the skills they need to be self sufficient. To date our programmes have supported over 280 youngsters from slums in Colombia and 30 youngsters living in disadvantaged circumstances in Surrey in the UK.
