Charity description

The Arkwright Society logo
The Arkwright Society is consistently working to celebrate the impact of Sir Richard Arkwright's construction of the worlds first successful water powered cotton spinning mill in 1771.

The Arkwright Society is creating a living celebration of the far reaching impact of Sir Richard Arkwright's construction of the world’s first successful water powered cotton spinning mill at Cromford in 1771.

Following half a century of dilapidation, dereliction and contamination the site has over the past three decades been rescued by the Arkwright Society saving it from demolition.

Cromford Mills have been described as the most important preserved textile heritage site in the world, as shown by its World Heritage Site status. It is from these buildings that Sir Richard Arkwright developed technology that changed the world we live in, giving rise to the industrial revolution by creating the modern factory system.

Support us to “Get Cromford’s Wheels Turning” by raising enough funds to ensure we can meet our annual obligations to UNESCO to maintain and improve the site for future generations.
