In1986 reactor number 4 at the Chernobyl plant in the Ukraine exploded. The wind was northerly, resulting in Belarus receiving 70% of the fallout.
There are high cancer rates among children in Belarus. Thyroid Cancer and widespread immune deficiency syndrome are common, making them prone to other diseases. The Belarusian Childrens Hospice was established in 1994. It provides palliative care for children and young adults from birth to 24 who have a life-threatening or life-limiting illness. A summer camp programme that runs in the summer months
is situated in a comparatively clean area of Belarus called Zabrodya. Our main aim is to fundraise to open this summer camp and to provide volunteers to run it every summer. The majority of the children that attend the camp are disabled or recovering from cancer. The camp provides a vital holiday for the children as well as respite for their parents.
