St Helen's Catholic Junior School Academy
Sister Thecla’s dream came true when the pool opened and Mrs Farley was appointed as a swimming instructor. Within six months of opening the swimming pool, the children improved their swimming skills sufficiently to compete in inter-house fun galas. The galas were held on Sunday afternoons. Parents were invited to come and see their children’s progress. By July 1976 the standard of swimming in the school had improved sufficiently for the first championship gala to be held and the programme for that event proudly states that “318 out of 320 children could swim a width of the pool and that 50 had achieved 2 miles". This gala has now become an annual event.
The swimming continued to flourish. We are very proud that all our children benefit from this wonderful facility and they are able to swim confidently and safely. Please help us to continue to offer swimming lessons for current and future generations of pupils of St. Helen's.
St. Helen’s does not receive any funding towards the maintenance and upkeep of the swimming pool. I know there are many parents, or even grandparents, who learnt to swim at St. Helen’s. In order for the school to continue to provide swimming lessons the necessary work must be carried out as soon as possible.
Therefore, I am writing to parents, guardians, friends of St. Helen’s and past pupils to ask you all to make a contribution towards the cost of swimming pool improvement. We need the following to keep the pool open.
Swimming pool re-tiling £29,625.00,
Filter Replacement £1,640.00
Lane Rope Anchors £1,320.00
