Providing Sporting Opportunities for People with a Learning Disability

Our main aim is to provide a pathway for athletes with a learning disability to have the
opportunity to train, be coached and qualify through local and regional competitions to enter the Special Olympic National Games. In order to achieve
this we have set up a weekly sports and social club which meets every Wednesday at YMCA Plymouth 6.30 to 8.30 for anybody with a learning disability aged 16 upwards.
Why does the community need this charity?
There are very few opportunities for people with a Learning Disability to participate in Sports in our local area. Sport is a great way of breaking down barriers, and really good
for a person’s fitness, self-esteem and confidence and allows for social interaction.
Results and outcomes
Since the club started in September 2011 we have seen our member’s confidence
and concentration whilst participating in sport improve tremendously. Great friendships have been formed, athletes are taking an active role in how their club is run.
