Shyira Trust

Charity description

Shyira Trust logo
The Trust exists to serve the people of Rwanda by helping in the advancement of education and medical services. Its work has been based around Shyira in the North West, but is now moving to a wider area. The Trust works with local people to promote development and does not hand out funding to individuals.
The Trust sends all money donated to it for use in Rwanda. That is because its management expenses are few and are met by membership fees paid by its members.

We first started working with the people of Shyira in 2001, first rebuilding a maternity hospital and then supporting two nurses for training as midwives. The result was a huge reduction in the number of infant and maternal deaths and a maternity hospital growing in popularity. In 2014 the government decreed that much of Shyira hospital did not meet the required standard for safe healthcare and that a new hospital should be built. The Trust purchased the land for the hospital, and paid for relocation of people that had been living on it, that enabling the hospital the government would build to remain a church facility.
The new hospital opened on 4th July 2017 and the Trust’s focus for future work changed since there is no longer a need to support a maternity facility. That is enabling us to concentrate on four projects, each of which will soon have its own fundraising page with links below.
You can donate to the Trust on this page if you wish with no details displayed. The Trust will use any such donation on whatever project has priority at the time.
