Refugee Trauma Initiative
Like many, we are deeply concerned about the refugee crisis and how it is affecting lives, particularly children.
RTI works to reduce the trauma and enhance the wellbeing of refugees by offering psychosocial support to individuals and families living in refugee camps, and training and supporting volunteers working there. A core value of our work includes respecting the humanity and dignity of all people.
We have reviewed and mapped the lack of qualified and culturally appropriate psychosocial support services that are currently available to the tens of thousands of refugees housed in Greek government and NGO administered camps in Northern Greece.
With your help, we believe that we can begin to fill this gap in trauma services and make a significant positive difference to the lives of some of the most vulnerable refugee children and families who have been lucky to survive the journey from their war torn homes to Turkey and the sea crossing to Greece.
Their trauma has been compounded by the deep uncertainty of facing an unknown future in a semi permanent refugee camp, with access only to basic shelter and food. Even if and when they reach a country like Germany, a recent report by Germany's chamber of psychotherapists found that half of refugees are experiencing psychological distress and mental illness resulting from trauma.
One fifth of refugee children are also suffering from PTSD, according to the same report. (BBC News)
