Charity description

Ramsgate Arts is a professional arts organisation run voluntarily by a small group of people based in and around Ramsgate in Kent. We came together in 2009 to bring something new, inspiring and exciting to this edge of Kent and to the people who live here. Arts and culture were what bound us together, our belief in and experiences of the value of high quality engagement with art as a building block for a stronger and more cohesive society. Everyone needs joy, fun and the opportunity to encounter new ideas and new stimulus, so we set out to do what we could to create some exciting new activity here in Ramsgate.

After launching our first event Love: Hate: Hope: Ramsgate in 2009, we discovered that people were interested in all sorts of culture, from writing to theatre, film and music. We decided to launch an arts festival and in August 2010 ran the first Summer Squall. Not only were local people thrilled and a bit stunned, we brought new people to the town to enjoy its beautiful coast, royal harbour and friendly, welcoming people. We raised £29,000 and put on 51 professional events in over 20 venue around town for a 3-day festival. Artists came from the local area and across the UK for a programme that delighted children and adults alike. We have maintained an annual festival, which changed its name to the Ramsgate Festival in 2015, and this year we are seeking to raise over £100,000 for a very ambitious programme. Beyond this annual festival, Ramsgate Arts has set up and delivered countless activities, largely free of charge, for people in Ramsgate and Thanet. Our aim is always to look for ways to use the arts to enthuse, entertain, educate and inspire people, regardless of the ability to pay, across the wide spectrum of people, many who live in extreme poverty, in this area.
