Charity description

Thank you for visiting our profile page on MyDonate. The Parish Church of St.Mary Magdalene, South Molton has launched an appeal to raise £250,000. Called the PROTECT APPEAL its aim is to renew the south aisle roof, and make internal improvements.
The Grade 1 listed building, having stood and served at the heart of South Molton for many centuries, was placed on the Heritage at Risk register . This is maintained by the conservation body Historic England. It was placed in their highest category of risk as being ‘in immediate risk of further rapid deterioration or loss of fabric.’

Failure to replace the south aisle roof carried a very real risk that before long the building would become unsafe and unusable.
During 2017  the south aisle roof has been completely stripped, rotten timbers replaced, and the roof re-slated.
At the same time new lead in the gutters, new hoppers and downpipes have been fitted.
The Protect Appeal has so far resulted in £77,000 being raised through donations and many fundraising events. We are also grateful for a £100,000 grant from the Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund. Despite these and other sources, the cost of repairing the roof far exceeds this income, and will require a very considerable input from Parish Church finances, putting them under considerable strain.
We want the building to retain its importance as a place of worship, but also to enable its use as a venue for the wider community.
Making it more attractive as a venue will enable us to generate much needed revenue to support the building.
We aim of provide a toilet and basic catering facilities, part of the original intention when launching the Appeal.
Please help us preserve St. Mary Magdalene church for future generations.
