Plastic Oceans

Charity description

Plastic Oceans logo
The Ocean is drowning in our plastic pollution. We are currently putting 8 million tonnes of waste into the ocean every year and it is having a devastating impact on the marine environment, wildlife and, ultimately, human health. Our mission is to change the worlds attitude towards plastic waste within a generation.

To do this we need your help.  Hopefully you have seen how you can get involved and the changes you can make.  However, your donations are essential. We will use them to continue to develop our education programmes in order that people will know about the problem and what they can do about it.  We will continue to develop and support the scientific data that is essential to lobby governments and drive policy.  We will continue to work within business and industry to develop alternative and more sustainable solutions as well as better waste management processes.  We also need to continue to fund the day to day operation of the Foundation as it grows across the world.
Thanks you for your support.

Plastic Oceans was founded by Jo Ruxton and Sonjia Norman in 2009. Their aim was to raise awareness of the growing ocean plastic pollution issue. For their first project they embarked on an ambitious mission to create a film ‘A Plastic Ocean’ that would enable them to reach as many people as possible

Turn the clock forward 8 years. The film has been produced and has been critically acclaimed around the world.  It is available in a growing number of languages and has been screened in front of the general public as well as world leaders.  While continuing to promote the film, the Foundation is now turning its attention to other projects in order to achieve its mission. We are supporting further scientific research including a systematic review of the available data. We are developing education programmes that can be rolled out into schools in the UK and further afield.  We are building links with industry, particularly those with close ties to the oceans, to encourage the exchange of best practice, cost and waste reduction methods and other activities aimed at reducing our plastic footprint and preventing it getting into the oceans.
