Charity description

OutSailing logo
Out Sailing is an initiative designed to build confidence and provide new social and networking opportunities for vulnerable lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) young people through sailing.  Sailing is a wonderful way of building self-confidence, learning new skills, enjoying being part of a team and simply having fun out on the water.
The young people involved are all going through difficult experiences at the current time, either living in a hostile environment or having been made homeless after coming out as LGBT.

Their situation, the lack of family support, difficulties and prejudice they have encountered and continue to encounter can result in a loss of confidence, low self esteem, and limited aspirations. Their opportunities to try new experiences, work with others and make new connections may be severely limited by their home circumstances or financial position and few have the experience of positive LGBT role models, within a home, learning or workplace setting. Out Sailing aims to provide a very positive experience for the young people, where they can meet new people, learn something new and develop new skills as part of a team in a safe and supportive environment.

In 2017, Out Sailing is running two separate weekends in Newcastle and Cowes, offering more LGBT young people an opportunity to take part.
