Charity description

Ocean Maths works with primary and secondary schools to help improve pupils’ mathematics through involving parents/carers by:

· Providing accessible and challenging homework that children and parents share.

· Delivering school-based workshops where parents and children engage in practical and enjoyable maths activities together.

· Training teachers to help parents help their children learn maths.

Ocean Maths came into being in 2001. The aim of the project was to help children in one of the most disadvantaged areas in the country: a large post-war housing estate in Stepney, East London, called the Ocean Estate. The project sought to address underachievement in mathematics by changing the attitudes and practices of schools, parents and children, specifically through involving their parents in their child’s mathematics learning process.

Today, Ocean Maths works with schools across the country including Birmingham, Devon and Manchester.
