Merseyside Asbestos Victims Support
The group was set up in 1993 by relatives and sufferers of asbestos related diseases. The group's aims were to change the appalling lack of local services and information available to victims. We have since assisted thousands of victims with welfare benefits, practical assistance completing paperwork, representation at Appeals Service tribunals and general help and support wherever it is required.
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer exclusively caused by exposure to asbestos dust. It affects the lining of the lungs, chest wall or abdomen. The development of this disease can take up to 10 - 40 years after a person has been exposed to asbestos.
Merseyside in particular has a long history of asbestos use. In 1975 Liverpool Docks imported 25.3 thousand metric tons of asbestos which was used in local industries including car production, ship building, construction and insulation work.
