At MCR, we know that there is amazing potential and talent in our most disadvantaged young people. Varied, unique and inspiring in every single one. But for many, that potential has yet to be discovered. Life experience has knocked the confidence out of some, firmly locking away those seeds of aspiration and hope. It is our aim to uncover, nurture, develop and help to realise the skills and capabilities in our most disadvantaged young people. We bridge talent with opportunity through relationship focused mentoring.
MCR recruits, trains & supports high quality volunteer mentors who meet their young person weekly for a minimum of a year. Building relationships, confidence & self-esteem are the prerequisite to helping the young people find, grow & use their talents.
Results over the 10 years have been exceptional. 64% of our young people are staying on at school beyond 4th year, compared to a national average of 27% of care experienced young people doing so. 88% achieve 5 subjects at Level 4 or better (57% national avg). 81% progress to a positive destination after school (57% national avg).
Our most disadvantaged young people are 5 times more likely to leave school at or before they turn 16 and over half end up in unsustainable post-school destinations.
MCR Pathways is a school based mentoring programme supporting those in or on the edges of the care system to realise their full potential through education.
Founded by social entrepreneur Iain MacRitchie in 2007 and developed in one school over 5 years, the programme now supports over 600 young people aged between 12 and 18.
From St Andrew’s Secondary, in the city’s east end, the programme grew to support young people across 6 Glasgow schools and then 15. Since August 2017, the programme now supports young people across all 30 Glasgow secondaries. It is a pioneering partnership of the MCR Foundation and Glasgow City Council dedicated to closing the attainment gap and a radical improvement in positive post school destinations.
MCR has a national ambition with additional schools in Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen and Dundee.
The MCR vision is that disadvantaged young people across the country will have the same educational outcomes, career opportunities and life chances as any other young person.
