Maji Salama

Charity description

Maji Salama logo
Clean water = investing in Kenya's future. Maji Salama ("safe water" in Kiswahili) is a registered charity working in Kenya, using a simple, effective low cost tool, the Aquafilter (now k/a Grifilter) to provide bacteria and virus free water to families, schools and clinics. 16.5m Kenyans lack access to safe water and 10,000 children die every year from water borne disease. We believe a healthy population is a more productive population. Our work can make a contribution to Kenya's future.

Working with local partners, not only do we provide Family and Community filters to poor communities, we educate them about water borne diseases, give training in the filter's use, maintenance and servicing. We are providing new knowledge and skills. Maji Salama has projects running in Kiambiu slum in Nairobi. and in several communities near Lake Victoria. We also provide filters and training to other charities.A Family filter costs £25 and the Community filter is £200. The innovative filters are:
  • simple to use
  • easy to hand pump
  • portable
  • long lasting (5 years so far)
  • low cost (and no filter cartridge to replace)
  • developed and made in NE England
  • laboratory and field tested.
