Lancaster Steiner School

Charity description

Lancaster Steiner School logo
The school was first set up by only 5 committed families (pretty impressive) and we intend to keep their dream alive. Their dream was to enable families in the North West of England to opt out of mainstream schooling and access Steiner education if they so wish.

A bit about why we are so passionate about this school. With both of our backgrounds working with children, we firmly believe that, as a community, as a country and as a society our children's futures are something worth investing in and that is what this school does. The teachers invest their time, energy, wisdom and passion into the children. We love that only a few passionate and committed parents managed to set this school up through sheer determination and love. The kindergarten began in a cellar, and teachers, volunteers and parents have worked hard to get to where we are now, based in a lovely old building in Lancaster with a large garden for the children to play in.

In it's latest inspection (2014) the school was rated 'Good with outstanding features'.

What's different about this school? One key difference between Steiner education & mainstream is that the education is rooted in the developmental needs of the child rather than the focus of a particular government. Steiner schools have a high degree of autonomy to decide how best to construct their curriculum. The curriculum is designed to meet the developmental needs & stages of childhood rather than the child having to meet the needs of the curriculum. The school particularly nurtures social development - children are resilient, confident & happy.

It's the only school in the region offering an alternative to mainstream education. The school has a sliding scale on fees to help lower income families to access this education. Having this sliding scale means that more fundraising is needed to meet running costs of the school. The school is a NON PROFIT MAKING organisation & has charity status.
