Kwa Mkono Disabled Children's Trust

Charity description

Kwa Mkono Disabled Children's Trust logo
The Trust provides rehabilitation, education and training to physically disabled children in Tanzania by providing grants of equipment and funds so the Kwa Mkono Disabled Children's Centre can offer rehabilitation, education and training to physically disabled young people enabling them to live independently when they leave.

The Polio Hostel was originally set up by anglican nuns to help the children disabled by polio. There are now few polio cases but there are many physically disabled children. The Hostel is now named Kwa Mkono Disabled Children's Centre. Physically disabled children cannot always access schools or treatment due to distances and lack of money. The centre has 48 beds which are always full and has a waiting list. Children are accepted from the age of 9 years and they stay until they finish education/training which can be about mid 20's.2 trustees visit the centre at least yearly to check on progress and discuss future needs. All the administration costs are met by the trustees apart from bank charges incurred transferring money to Tanzania.
