Since then, others have heard the story and got involved.
We support the grassroots organisation in Nkhata Bay like HOPEmalawi. HOPEmalawi support those that are looking for a helping hand, not a hand-out. They argue against those in their community who won’t do anything to help themselves as much as the poverty they see around them. These are the people determined to help make a permanent change away from dependence on aid. That’s the end game.
Our hope is to link people and community groups in the UK that will support and encourage similar groups in Nkhata Bay; these days’ communities have no borders. They inspire us as much as we inspire them. We are a community of like-minded people and everyone who wants to join in is welcome.
For us it's vital that the projects we support have certain traits:
- They are community led; the local people know
what help is needed and where resources are best used. Well-intentioned but badly targeted support is a waste
- They are sustainable; we're willing to do what we can but, in the end, we want to do away with the need for our help.
- They have a continuing engagement between supporters in UK and people in Malawi; we'd like to know what's happening. It’s important for us to encourage personal contact with people we support rather than give to a larger charity.
What we do has a real impact on real people. Chaona, Gabriel, Daniel and Kondwani go to School now. Dozens of young people engage in the Sports program. Pre-school children in Chihame and Kakumbi have a nursery to attend and aspiring artists are getting support to develop their craft and potential income.
