Our volunteers (all parents themselves) visit families at home, helping them access local services and supporting parents as they learn to cope, improve their confidence and build better lives for their children
Each family is unique; Home-Start York specifically tailors the support given to the needs of each one. Parents choose the aspects of their life with which they need the most help, and Home-Start York professional organisers encourage and direct the volunteer to focus on those needs.
The non-judgemental, needs-orientated approach builds up self-esteem and by the end of support, enables families to feel confident in finding solutions to their problems. Volunteers offer friendship and practical assistance to families in difficulties. They, and a small team of dedicated part time staff, have enhanced DBS certification, are trained in the Children’s Act, Health & Safety legislation and Child Safety.
Home-Start York has been serving families living within the City of York boundary for over 29 years. Highly trained volunteers, supported and supervised by a dedicated professional staff team, provide one-to-one support at home for families with young children under six, visiting at least weekly for six months or longer, as required.
During this period, 1660 families have been supported by a gifted army of volunteers working to provide practical, non-judgemental support.
Families can approach Home-Start York direct or through referrals from the close working relationship with The City of York Council and the Vale of York CCG.
3 part time staff and currently 32 volunteers run the service. It has a volunteer management board that has a range of skills and a budget of £56,000. Voluntary donations and fundraising activities cover the shortfall of £20,000 each year; please help us bridge the gap.
